More on the Castle

January 5th 1649.

The Earl of Arundel issued a warrant " for the repairinge of

the rooines at Sheffield castle, then undemolished."

"Its ruined walls were never built up again; —

from this period, the once proud castle of Sheffield

was but a heap of shapeless ruins, every year

doing something to complete the destruction which

the axe of violence had begun. A few vaults are

all which now (1828) remain to bear witness that

such an edifice once stood on what is still however

called the Castle-hill."

I understand that some of the castle remains lay below Castle House, Department store, if the area is to redeveloped then I am sure an archeological dig will follow releasing even more of Sheffields past, its surprising what gems were uncovered with the building of the ring road, such as the remains of the brick built furnaces you can see in the walls.

There are pictures of the Castle Remains in "The Story of Sheffield Castle" by David Saville (ISBN 190158759-2), £4.95 from Alistair Lofthouse Design & Print.

We hope for better pictures once the demolition begins, hope they are considerate.
