RichardB
Why would the people of Sheffield give the King "duos albos lepores" (two white hares) every year in the time of Henry VII (1485-1509) ? I think it was at the time of the Festival of John the Baptist but my Latin is dreadful !
syrup
Why would the people of Sheffield give the King "duos albos lepores" (two white hares) every year in the time of Henry VII (1485-1509) ? I think it was at the time of the Festival of John the Baptist but my Latin is dreadful ! According to Folklore it was a Pagan custom to catch Hares at Easter Tide and eat at a Public Feast on ST Johns day. But where the King came into it i do not know as it seems to be a German tradition. http://links.jstor.org/sici?sici=0015-587X...%3E2.0.CO%3B2-O
