Owlerton

The small suberb of 'Owlerton' has been all but consigned to the history books as it has become consumed by the much larger Hillsborough Area. In fact, all you'd know of 'Owlerton' nowadays are the Stadium (Dog Track) and the named 'Owlerton Green', a very short road branching off the Bradfield Road roundabout towards Peniston Road. Other people would also point out the references to 'Owlerton' with Sheffield Wednesday, nick-named 'The Owls' since their move to the area (although there are conflicting stories of the inception of the clubs' nickname).

Owlerton Stadium has been staging a number of events over the years, from Greyhound racing, to Speedway and even things like 'Monster Trucks'. The huge complex is owned by A&S Leisure, the company of the Sheffield Wednesday chairman, Dave Allen, and houses many bars, tote-betting booths and even a Napoleons casino in the huge car-park (which also nowadays has a scooter/bike training centre based there). The stadium itself was built on the site of what was once Owlerton village green.

Owlerton Forge was a huge industrial complext based on the site of what is now B&Q (Just off Penistone Road, by Hillsborough Barracks. The area around this part of Owlerton was a mixture of Residential terraces and huge Industrial factories and cooling towers. Hillfoot Steel had at one time a huge footprint in the part of the town, along with Eaton and Booths tinting and forging mill.

Swann Morton has occupied the area encompassed by Owlerton Green, Borough Road and Penistone Road for many years, although it now looks larger and more modern (and has much more recently expanded across onto the other side of Owlerton Green, where 'Elm Stores' stands as an end-terrace in the bottom-right of the below picture). World famous, Swann Morton are one of the larget manufacturers of surgical instruments. Also in this picture, you can see Penistone Road in the distance as it was in 1973, with terraces of houses, Sunblest bakery (although that's now gone too) and just beyond that where Hillsborough Leisure Centre (built and opened for the 1991 World Student Games) now stands.

Were there Pubs stood there?

I know there was one on the corner of Owlerton Green, opposite the Church on Penistone Road, which can be seen in one of the pictures above.

I'll try to find the name...

Victoria Hotel - 327 Langsett rd 6

Victoria Hotel - 80 & 82 Addy st 6

Caught someone with a Swann Morton scalpel blade today, he didn't know my interests, I showed up with my full case of knives and stuff, threatened to trim his toenails; he just laughed ... I'm well known at work for having a large collection of "stuff" - housed at work ...

Swann Morton's used to win prizes for the cleanest, neatest place, with the best gardens ....

that one ?

It was called 'The Sportsmans Group', I was told by my old father in law that they used to hold boxing in the back yard. He used to pass the bucket up for his brother, the ex post war British champ Billy Patterson, I only went in once, and that was to watch,(on tv), Alan Minter get a good hiding from a very young Marvin Hagler, I would think about 1979-80.
