Langsett Road

Here is a list of some buildings that occupied Langsett Road, Hillsborough - some are gone, but not necessarily forgotten.

It would be great if anyone has any pictures of any of these landmarks to let us know or post them here - obviously, you may post your own memories of these buildings - or of Langsett Road in the thread! There is a seperate thread for Hillsborough Barracks / Hillsborough Baths.

Holliday's Collecters Corner - No. 364, on the corner of Bamforth Street (Now demolished, the slip-road onto Bamforth Street and small green area take up most of the site). Holliday's was a veritable plethora of collectables, from porcelain to paintings owned and run by Arthur Holliday up until his death (70's?).

Victoria Vaults - Situated on the corner of Woodland Street. Public House, Now demolished - it stood adjacent to where the old 'Tollhouse' still stands.

Patnick's - Large building on the corner of Channing Street), A House Clearance shop that doubled as a collectors emporium. Stocked everything from Records and books up to furniture (also had a branch at Page Hall).

Lingards - No's 320-322. Ironmongers, stood proud on Langsett Road for many years on the same spot (is listed in the 1905 directory as H.A. Lingard Ltd).

Cuthbert Arms - No 296. Cuthbert Arms was both a public house and a beer off shop, with the beer-off shop front taking prominence. This is an unusual trait, as most public houses simply had a seperate counter for off-sales.

The shop itself had three beer pumps where wives would go with a jug to fetch a fathers' evening beer after a long day at work. The Beer Act was introduced when children fetched their fathers' beer as they would regularly sample the drink! After that beer supplied to children had to be in sealed bottles.

Horsfall's - No. 236. Pet Shop located fairly close to Cuthbert Bank (Pigeon Cotes), so had supplies of everything from Dog food to pigeon feed. Also sold garden supplies.

Hampdon View Hotel - Corner of Greaves Street. Public House, now demolished. Not sure of exact dates, but was present around the turn of the 20th century.

Royal Hotel - Opposite corner of Greaves Street to the Hapden View (both pictured above). Public House, also now demolished. Not sure of exact dates, but were present around the turn of the 20th century.

Lyceum Hotel - No 153 Langsett Road, corner of King James street. Public House.

Bee Hive Inn - No. 115 (Near Creswick Street/Primrose Hill). Public house in the 60's - now demolished.

Primrose Hill Filling Station - Corner of Primrose Hill (Near the Supertram Stop). The old BP Filling Station is now closed, but had a bit of fame in it's time as it was one of the small locations used in the film 'Full Monty'.

Wellington - Corner of Wood Street (Where Hillsborough Hotel now is?). Public House, around the turn of the century.

All pictures from the fantastic book "A Hillsborough Camera" by J R Wrigley (available now from online retailers)

What was the name of the record shop on the corner ?

I think it turned into a pet food shop ?

If I'm right it was run as a record shop before that by someone called Ian who had a great collection of 12" records..

Head up from Hillsborough, barracks on your left, maplins on the right..

Carry on up, boys club on your right, italian on your left on the corner

Then you get to some lights

That corner (the one facing you)

I'm sure at one point there used to be a sign advertising straw or pet food in the window ?

Opposite corner is open land, and the road goes down to Penistone Road right at the bottom

Bamforth Street? The opposite corner to where Hollidays was? (Or the opposite corner to where the slip road is now that takes you onto Bamforth Street and down to Penistione Road?).

Not sure of the Record Shop there to be honest? Hopefully someone else might remember it?

As you take the slip road down on to Penistone Road - the building is on the corner facing you as you get to the lights..

Would also be interested in any pictures you can find of The Phoenix cinema which stood where Maplins is now (when it was demolished a petrol station was built - the front of Maplins shows evidence of this)

All these photographs are from my book "A Hillsborough Camera".

The book contains 80 or so photographs of Hillsborough most of which I took myself.

It is one of a series of books that are based either on photographs I took myself or collected over many years.

The other books in the series are:

An Ecclesfield Camera (Out of print); A Walkley Camera; A Sheffield Camera; An Industrial Camera; A Darnall Camera; An East End Camera; An Owlerton Camera; A Pitsmoor Camera.

The books are still on sale at Waterstones etc.

I do not mind any of the photos being used on the Sheffield History project but I do request that you mention the book and my name when using them - I think that is only fair.

The Unity cinema was on Langsett Road opposite the Kelvin Flats between Wood Street and Gertrude Street. I do not have a picture of it as a cinema but this shows the building in its latter days before it was demolished. The Mecca Bingo building and car park now occupy the area.

You're right. Memories sometimes play tricks on you, but what was originally on the filling station site next to the old Police Station?

The old Police Station was at the Bottom of Burgoyne Road and in the 50's and 60's became a Dentist think the bloke what had it was called Ball.

THE POLICE STATION IS NOTED FOR A POLICEMAN CALLED (BOBBY SHAW) FEATURED IN THE LOCAL BOOK "LIFE AND TIMES OF BOBBY SHAW". I AM ALSO RELIABLY IMFORMED THAT THERE WAS HOUSES WERE THE GARAGE WAS,BEFORE IT WAS KNOCKED DOWN.
