Thanks again abcman.

I knew it was the D'Oyly Carte company that performed all the G&S stuff in theatres but I was not aware of a film version.

Makes me wonder how many G&S operettas are on film, - HMS Pinnafore perhaps? Any others?

'D'Oyly Carte first filmed 'The Mikado' in 1939 although this was a more 'Americanised' version of the opera. After the 1960's remake of 'The Mikado' they recorded a TV version of 'HMS Pinafore' in the 1970's and then the New D'Oyly Carte Company recorded another 'Mikado' in the 1990's which was recorded at the Buxton Opera House. There is also a cartoon version of 'Ruddigore' which was made by Halas & Batchelor in 1967 using the voices of the D'Oyly Carte Company members.

Thanks again abcman,

Not only another ex projectionist but quickly becoming the SheffieldHistory local cinemas expert along with details of what was shown and when.

Brilliant stuff.

Love the cars parked outside a couple of Austin Cambridges sandwiched by what looks like a Ford Corsair and a Ford Anglia

If the still is on public display then it must be either_

Not from that film,

From a very "safe" scene out of that film

A heavily censored still from that film.

lol

Fuzzy memories need focusing.

Was there a time in the early/mid 80's when the only public cinema showing newly released films in Sheffield was the council run one under the Grosvenor?

Am I correct in remembering going to Studio 5-6-7 in 1986/7 but only after it had re-opened? Did it only show "old" films?

When did the 'new' Odeon in Barkers Pool open/close?

I think this council run one under the grosvenor was called The Anvil cinema.

Even that can't have been too much of a success as it got divided up into 3 small studios called Anvil 1, 2 and 3. Each of these then showed films using 16mm with Bell & Howell projectors as this smaller format film would give adequate picture quality on the now much smaller screens designed to be shown to much smaller audiences. As I remember it after this change it did NOT show new films, - only old ones which were easily available in 16mm.

In the very late 1970's I went there to see "It came from outer space" and "The creature from the black lagoon", both films made in the 1950's.

They were both shown on a smallish screen using 16mm film.

They were however (the point of actually bothering to go and see them) shown in their original 3D red - green analglyph format

Even got a pair of those red - green filter lens glasses to watch it as you went in lol

The three cinemas under the Grosvenor Hotel in Charter Square originally opened under the name of Cineplex and were run by an ex Rank Organisation official called David Williams. They opened on 31st January 1972 and were taken over by the Council in 1983 and renamed the Anvil. They closed on 3rd November 1990.

The 'new' Odeon twin in Barker's Pool opened on Thursday 20th August 1987 with a Gala Showing of the latest James Bond film 'The Living Daylights' shown in both cinemas. At that time I was the manager of the ABC Cinema in Angel Street as was invited (and attended) the opening. A Civic reception was held in the City Hall after we saw the film. The 'new' Odeon twins closed on 20th November 1994 two years after the Arundel Gate Odeons had opened.

Photo of Studio 7 re-opening in 1967 with 'The Mikado'

The orange auditorium drapes and the 'Floating' screen were fitted during the rebuild after a fire in Dec 1967 along with the 'ribbon' mask drapes.

The new auditorium lighting was unique it was dimmable flourescent which was state of the art at the time.

Italian 70mm projectors were also installed at that time but never used for public shows and they were eventually removed to the Isle of Wight and replaced with the usual Westrex equipment although the sound system remained.

Nice to see the picture of the rebuilt cinema. I remember showing the Mikado and it did quiet well box office wise.

Another unusual film for Studio 7 which got its first Sheffield screening here in 1967. The Burton/Taylor version of 'The Taming Of The Shrew' was also shown here around the same time.

In 1969, Paramount fell out with the big cinema circuits just before 'Paint Your Wagon' was due to be shown at the ABC in 70mm. We even had the print delivered to the cinema and had a trial run through.Unfortunately with the falling out the run was cancelled and it was shown down the road at Studio 7. Blackpool ABC Princess somehow managed to still secure it for the Summer Season in 1969 and after two or three months Paramount films returned to the ABC Angel Street. Lucky Doncaster patrons were able to see it at their ABC after this in the 70mm format.

Hi Dave

Sorry to hear about Tsavo but ive been away for a while.

True I was a projectionist for the Star Group (having started in the RAFCC and Gaumont Circuit) firstly as a relief and moving around the country to eventually be chief at Studio 7 from 66 mid 69 with a few more travels to other Star Cinemas in London and Sunderland in between.

Tsavo was just before I arrived in Sheffield but he knew the old Chief (Jack) who died in 1966 and who I had met.

I went to most of the Star Cinemas in and around Sheffield and latterly sadly to salvage gear after closure or conversion to bingo and decided to make a move away from cinemas and remained in Sheffield for another two years before I was banished to London and currently the south east.

Remember these as they both did quite well and were an attempt by Star to go upmarket with Studio 7 and repeat the excercise in thier Manchester and Leeds cinemas.

The auditorium had been redecorated just before these two films and new offices added so the usherettes had a changing room.

Unfortunatly there was a fire that gutted the auditorum (started on the balcony it was thought a cigarette or match had fallen between a crack in the floorboards).

Do you remember the film 'Baby Love' which had its Northern Premier and was attended by some of the cast. I can only Remember Linda Hayden (I wonder why).

It;'s great to have quite a few experienced and long serving local ex-projectionists as members of Sheffield History as they have added a lot of useful information and stories about the old local cinemas and this is information which may not be available anywhere else.

The land where the Studio 5,6,7 Cinemas (Ex Wicker Cinema) was incorporated into the new inner ring road.

Hello all. I have a fond memory of 5,6,7 I'd like to share. I went to school at King Ecgbert's in Dore. I think it was in the 5th form when the teachers in their infinite wisdom devised a class called "Life Skills". As I remember it there were various options of things to do each week. Some were things like tennis, others were trips out to see working places. I'm a bit hazy on those details. Anyway, one week was supposed to be a visit to steel works or something and we were supposed to take the bus ourselves and find our own way there by a certain time. Unbelievably trusting eh? My friend and I were a little on the naughty side, so we got "lost" (wagged off school basically) and conveniently found ourselves at the cinema! No soft porn I'm afraid-just E.T. Somehow we pulled this off again shortly afterwards and saw Running Scared. Anyway, after apologizing for missing the trips, we were told that learning how to catch the bus is an important "life skill" after all. Some room for improvement there. Now I live in America. No buses here to speak of! I remember a big poster of Anthony Perkins in Psycho 2 glaring at me at the top of the steps. It was a dive, but the source of a beloved memory.

Hello and welcome 'saberdance'. My sister-in-law Eunice Tate was a pupil of King Ecgbert's, though thinking about it the 2 films you watched dated from the 80s so she had probably left by then.. W/E.
