We used to do cross country running at Whitely Woods when I was at King Ted's back in the 70's. Happy days.

Don't remember the year I took this photograph of a drained Shepherd Wheel Dam? We just happened to be passing one Sunday morning on our way up to the cafe at Forge Dam.

Wonder if they found anything of note.

Restoration of Shepherd Wheel: Quote;

"Don't know about Rivelin but the dam at Shepherd Wheel was dredged in the early 70's I think, using two ploughing engines on the main path with cables strung on trees. I've got a photo somewhere, I'll go and have a search!"

With photographs of the Shepherd Wheel work in progress ...

"Because of the position of the dam at Shepherd Wheel it wasn't possible to get machinery next to the water. Behind the engines in the pictures is the river and the high bank is the dam wall. At one end of the dam is the little bridge on Hangingwater Rd, and at the other end are the mill buildings, so there was a system of pulleys rigged with the engines on the main path below the dam wall. I can't give any details as I'm passing on the comments and photos from a friend who took them."

Shepherds Wheel, Whiteley Woods, Sheffield by Chris Hobbs. Includes an article in the Sheffield Telegraph 29th October 2009 about the restoration of the wheel and dam.

Fantastic info, thank you!

I have fished in the Shepherd Wheel Dam, but that is going way back, to sometime around the mid 1980's.

Convalescent Hospital, Whiteley Woods

PostCardHospitalWhiteleyWoodConvalescent.jpg.bf5c14d3d181b1ca6d595d38f985f00e.jpg

The George Woofindin Convalescent Home, Whiteley Woods was erected by the Trustees of George Woofindin.

It opened in May 1901 mainly to cater for patients from the Royal Hospital. From 1943 it was used as a Rehabilitation Centre.

In 1955 it became Whiteley Woods Hospital and in 1958 the Whiteley Wood Psychiatry Clinic of the United Sheffield Hospitals and Sheffield University.

I think this photograph, Porter Glen, bowling green and tennis courts, was taken in the Whiteley Woods area?

Hi Steve. Yes! Originally they were along side the main path not far from the entrance.

The Bowling Green + another one had been built up the hill by 1914, the Tennis Courts moved later.

Note the people watching from Oakbrook Road in the distance. Looks like everyone is in their Sunday best!

On your first photo of the Whiteley Wood Entrance,  you can just make out the Tennis Courts on the far right.

but it's all lovely there anyway!                Regards Heartshome

Hi Steve. This is the entrance at the bottom of Highcliffe Road which turns in to Hangingwater Road.

It is facing opposite the other entrance leading to Shepherds Wheel/Bingham Park.

See the same entrance on Picture Sheffield  s11963

I think this "New bowling green" is in Whiteley Woods, not Endcliffe Woods as stated on the photograph?
