Suffolk Road and the Loxleys

In searching my family tree I have found many members of the Loxley living along Suffork Road - numbers 1, 27 and 48 all feature for various Loxley relatives including Edwin Loxley who was killed in August 1918 in Flanders. He was a private in the Loyal North Lancs regiment (not sure why he ended up here as the Loxleys were all S Yorks born and bred.)

There seems little sign of houses now - see photo - presumably following the Sheffield Blitz. Please any information, photos etc would be useful.

Thanks Richard.

You would be wrong about the blitz clearing houses. It was the Council that would sweep away these old properties to build flats etc. The above photo dates to 1948 - so the war didn't get them!

He had a rough war...he joined the York & Lancs Regiment in September of 1914 but was transferred to the Connaught Rangers. He was wounded at Gallipoli and transferred to the Royal Irish Regt for a short time before being sent to the Loyal North Lancs.

You are lucky in that a pretty full and very interesting Service Record survives for him on Findmypast

You'll have to pay unless there is still a free trial period available....here's a bit below.

There is a snippet in the British Newspaper Archives about him...he discovered the body of a girl drowned in the river

Kelly's directory, published 1925.

Odd numbers on the east side of Sulfolk Road.
