Views from Sheffield Cathedral steeple

I took these back in 2013 when I was allowed to climb up the cathedral steeple, there are narrow stairs up to the top of the tower where the steeple then begins. You can walk around all four sides of the tower which is where I was stood when taking these photos of views of all four directions...

All I can make out is : Harrison / a parish Church Steeple / Victorias ? visit / eighteen eighty five.

I do believe Harrison’s steeplejack may still be in existence but they were based on Regent Terrace.

Amazing views. The last time I was in Sheffield I discovered the Stone House pub and Coffee Shop had closed (both opposite the Cathedral). Does anyone know why? It used to be one of the busiest pubs in the city.

I wonder what the story behind "Of nelson column fame" is.

Mainly because they worked on it at some stage.

We've been here for a while...

The Harrison family have had a presence on Regent Terrace for well over a century now. They purchased what is now the bar in 1935, but have occupied buildings in the street since the 19th century. The building was previously the Meersbrook Spiritualist Chapel...we'll try to avoid any obvious spirits puns... For those of you interested in local history, we've sketched out a brief timeline below!

1854 - S. Harrison established by "Old Sam" Harrison. Louis Vuitton fashion house was founded, Oscar Wilde was born and the world's first oil well was drilled - in Poland.

1855 - Henry Bessemer patents the 'Bessemer Process', allowing mass production of steel from molten pig iron.

1857 - Sheffield FC formed.

1893 - Sheffield granted City status by Royal Charter.

1896 - W.E. Harrison Steeplejacks climb Nelson's Column for the first time, decorating it to celebrate the Column's Diamond Jubilee.  The world's first speeding ticket is issued, to Walter Arnold of East Peckham, for doing 8mph in a 2mph zone. The shortest ever war takes all of 38 minutes to complete - Britain being victorious over Zanzibar.

1901 - Sheffield's population is recorded at 451, 195.

1905 - W.E. Harrison Steeplejacks climb Nelson's Column for a second time, decorating it this time to celebrate the centenary of the Battle of Trafalgar. Las Vegas is founded, The Automobile Association is formed and Albert Einstein has his 'miracle year' - publishing 4 papers and formulates the special theory of relativity.

1935 - W.E. Harrison purchases the former Meersbrook Spiritualist Chapel; 75 years later it becomes Harrisons 1854. Beauchief, Dore and Totley are annexed to Sheffield. The first canned beer is sold by the Gottfried Krueger Company in New Jersey; coincidentally, Alcoholics Anonymous is also formed... Monopoly is released by Parker Brothers. Elvis, Dennis Potter and Darth Vader (well...David Prowse) are all born.

1940 - Nos 9 & 11 Regent Terrace are hit during the Sheffield Blitz. Today it remains perhaps the only war damaged building left in Sheffield! You'll be sat next to it if you enjoy our heated beer terrace.
