Andrea B
Hello I have recently discovered my great grandfather was in the Durham Light Infantry at least in the latter part of WW1. I have spoken with a researcher specialising in DLI and she doesn't think he started off there. As he was from Sheffield, which regiments would he most likely to have joined at the beginning of the war? And are there any available lists details the soldiers in each regiment?? I have a service number for him but I am aware that it was used by other soldiers also. Thanks in advance.
Hopman
There are various websites that might hold the information you want. Try https://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/first-world-war/centenary-digitised-records/ or https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk/military-records-monday-the-national-roll-of-the-great-war-1914-1918?utm_source=FWR&utm_medium=email&campaign_id=2004&template_id=1573&utm_campaign=fwr-mrm-nrgw-responsive-[cont]-07-09-2020-[ao]&sessionId=252463&sessionToken=962e151ae46c2083

He may have been 9th or 19th DLI in the latter part of WW1. I have a service number 59408 which I'm not sure is his as there were a number of William Osbornes in DLI. Many thanks! Osgathorpe56
I have found his Medal roll, he was in the 19th DLI, had a search for his service records, it looks like they did not survive. Suggest researching the DLI diaries, the Regimental museum is permanently closed, don't know why, but this may help https://www.durham.gov.uk/dlicollection
