Hi Tsavo, thank you so much for finding this, I found it fascinating, I was born and bred in Sheffield but now live in the hamlet of Huthwaite or Fauthwaite as it is referred to in the diary!The report of the vicar choosing to emasculate himself for having criminal talks with his housekeeper had me laughing out loud!! Will pass this on to the Local History group here as I am sure they will find it fascinating.

ps I think the reference to Blackburn of the Glass House dying in Sheffield refers to a later entry in the diary regarding Glassell Hall nr Kirkburton, but I could be wrong.

Hi Huthwaite, I was actually trying to find a reference to the inscription rock at Wharnecliffe when I came across this diary. Haven't read all of it yet and intend going back later. Have you worked out who wrote the diary? I got the feeling in a quick scan, that it was a female member of the Fretwell family, but could be wrong.

Thanks for the Glassell Hall comment, I'll follow it up later.

Thanks for the info, saved me a lot of Googling!

I have had another read through and think the writer is a male nephew of the Fretwell's who has a tannery possibly near the Monkey Pub previously called the eastfield Inn, will research some more ;-)

Googled this up and it's well worth the time taken to read it. Lots of people dying of all sorts of ailments, including one man who apparently died from knowing too much!

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

Try this link. It appears to be the same diary, though I originally thought it was written by a female, don't know why! Scroll to index page for John Hobson.

(This appears to be a much more complete version than the original and contains other diaries from the period as well)
