Can't disagree with that.
DaveJC
IMHO Sheffield’s lack of any historical interest is derived from the fact that it doesn’t have any history to be of any interest to anyone. If Oliver Cromwell and John Bright hadn’t decided to completely dismantle Sheffield Castle then there might just have been something to hang it’s historical hat on. The castle’s sister building, Manor Lodge, had far more left standing when I was a boy than it has now, proving that the City Council has had zero time for history in my lifetime, the Queen’s Head pub has miraculously survived despite the City Council. If anyone thinks that Sheffield has industrial history think again, the council has done very little to preserve it’s cutlery manufacturing history, let’s face it Sheffield and history are complete strangers. I’m appalled that the old cutlery firms, little mester shops, forges, horn and bone firms have all but been levelled as not worth saving and not one objection from the council, they were silent on every site that’s been cleared, even the home of Samuel Plimsoll was enthusiastically demolished, absolutely shameful. tozzin
This was a well remembered and loved Button Lane, now just a memory after it was completely removed from the city. Who remembers the Jubbly orange drink that’s advertised on the lorry? Look at the price card in the Clog and Slipper makers window, 1/4 for a pair of slippers perhaps, round about 9 pence in today’s money.

DaveJC
Just now, DaveJC said: We are of an age to remember such places, I just wonder what is on the city council’s current hit list, perhaps Orchard Street, it would fit the bill nicely. I haven’t set foot in the centre for longer than I can recall, and other than for legal reasons I don’t see me changing my stand.
