I sincerely hope that this site is not going to become like 95% of all the others where the friendly atmosphere is replaced by personal remarks.

It's already drifting away from it's Sheffield HISTORY origins.

There are plenty of sites already specialising in the kind of humour which some think is witty repartee.

Well said.

It’s called humour, if it troubles you that much by all means report my post. I’m obviously not in touch with the sites that you allude to, so can’t comment.

I am not small minded enough to be reporting anyone for minor lapses which may not even be seen by others as a lapse.

I would just prefer that the site didn't go down that road at all.

It has always been a friendly site where our joint love of local history could be discussed without personal observations being made which may or may not be funny to different people.

I, for one come on the site only for that purpose and was reading it  for the subject under discussion, which was simply the Sheffield John Lewis store..

Sorry if I come across as a "mardy arse" but I left behind, trivialisation and schoolboy humour many years ago.

Exactly why I joined SHF, history of a great city.

Which makes them quite legitimately think that I was insulting them, which was clearly not the case. Obviously my days on this forum are at an end, cheers  all.

Thank you organgrinder!!!

Back to John Lewis, does anyone remember the days when HP was a common form of purchasing and buying from Cole Brothers "on tick" involved a trip over a covered passageway across the road into their offices to fill in the forms?

We never had HP from Cole Brothers  but certainly did from Wiggies together with Rental from Dobsons in the 50's & 60's.

Most working families would never have survived in those days without goods on credit, rentals, or Provident cheques.

I seem to remember that Dobsons gave us the washer after so many rental payments had been made. (because we had paid for it 3 times over already).

Days of struggle but happy days anyway, in my opinion.

As a youngster I recall most working class families scarcely knew what a cheque book looked like and credit/debit cards were as "rea"l as Dan Dare. "Cash was King" .My family scarcely ever used HP or Provident cheques...doing without until enough had been saved to purchase out right.... but we did use both on rare occasions..It seems to me that my generation of kids who had lived through rationing and austerity began the"rot "using all the credit we could muster when credit finance was eased....including a Cole Brothers monthly account... til the day  came when, for many, our futures suffered from mass closures and reundancies. Now I won't borrow a sou!

As I posted ‘farts’ I assume that this is a swear word to you, all English dictionaries would beg to differ, but what would they know?

From the OED:

Quote

Chiefly regarded as coarse slang between the mid 18th and mid 20th centuries. Although now very common in informal use, the word continues generally to be considered unacceptable in formal contexts.

So vulgar, but not technically swearing.  Probably best avoided in written communication.

It all depends on who it’s aimed at, I wouldn’t dream of aiming it at your good self.

I was once bought a bottle of wine by my step daughter. It was a nice red called...".Old Fart". I accepted the gift both gratefully and graciously and never gave the "offending" word a second thought so common is its use in present day society!

This conversation reminded that in some cultures/languages there are no swear words just unacceptable phrases...According to an old Gaelic speaker I knew, Scots Gaelic is one such language....but I couldn't swear that is so!!!!

Whatever you do, don’t swear, now back to history. 😉

I lived across the road in the Yorkshireman's Arms for many years as a child. Cole Brothers was the first thing I saw every morning. Back in those days it didn't open on a Monday - but they did test the fire alarm. It was just opposite and below my bedroom window!

End of an era as John Lewis closes in Barkers Pool in Sheffield City Centre
Often spoken about as the heart of Sheffield City Centre, John Lewis (previously Cole Brothers) will not be here anymore

Did you shop here?

I remember well when the building was finished in the late 60s working from a cradle [see the cradle hooks around  top edge] cleaning down all the white tiles before handover to Cole Bros.

I hazard a guess that it will face demolition, if JL can’t trade there then it is unlikely that anyone else can. If it were to be let out piece by piece this could be horrendous, I favour some sort of theatre complex, Sheffield is sadly lacking in this area, what do you guys think?

I see that the high level footbridge was taken down recently.

But where did it go to?  I never met anyone who actually went over it.

It always amused me that JL staff members are classified as ‘Partners’, they’ve recently closed 15 stores that were staffed by many hundreds ‘Partners’, they must feel a lot better than would have if they had been just ‘staff members’.

I used the footbridge on the odd times I needed their admin.

I understood they were “partners” by virtue of their sharing in profits.Recent management changes seem to have changed this concept…as indeed the very nature of shopping at John Lewis.
