hilldweller
Some time in he late nineteen sixties my older cousin Jack, WMC and later cruise liner singer under the name of Martin Brand, used to take me out for a drink sometimes in his car. On one occasion he drove to Attercliffe Road and pulled up by the Travellers. I wasn't very impressed by the locale or the pub and the beer wasn't anything to write home about either. what I didn't know was that we were there for the "floor show". We sat over in a corner and eventually a bloke got up, walked to the bar and placed his glass on the bar top. He turned around and hadn't taken one step to the door before the publican reached under the bar for an already drawn pint and qiuck as a flash placed it on the bar. "Oi !" he shouted at the bloke who was still only about two paces nearer the door. "Who's going to pay for this pint then". The bloke protested that he didn't want another pint but the publican, a former Wednesday player, wasn't having any of it. The bloke paid up and walked straight out muttering to himself. The pint went straight back under the bar top. We drank up and left being very careful to leave the glasses on the table.

The number of pubs alone that have gone is so sad - Even relatively recently there was still half a dozen or more open - but now (pandemic aside) there’s next to nothing. Would love to have gone there when everything was open but before my time really. It’s still a really interesting place to walk round though.

DaveJC
Actually it’s all about people, not places. If all the pubs and shops/stores had not been devoid of human life for donkey’s years there might be some argument against their closing down/demolition. I don’t even frequent a local pub anymore, my shopping is conducted on-line or in a couple of very large suburban hyper markets, I’m at this moment enjoying a lovely bottle of 5%vol bottled beer costing just over £1.00, we are about to share a meal that would cost a small fortune in a pub/restaurant, plus I can have a couple more beers and wine with my meal, without any fear of arrest for risking drink driving. I book holidays/flights on line, are the wife and I so different to other folk?

I suppose some people would say that the alternatives you talk about have contributed to the devoid of people in pubs but not really to the overall benefit of communities. so a lot of those cheap beers bought from rich supermarket chains might have gone towards keeping some pubs open and the associated benefits a pub has for bringing people together to socialise etc.

DaveJC
Just a thought, I have strong connections with Attercliffe through my connections with people who lived/worked there. To the very best of my knowledge I don’t know one person who still lives or works there, to be honest most did well for themselves. What this thread is about is buildings that bring back memories of when they contained people, had they not been so well built it would not exist. I’d much prefer the likes of Sheffield Castle and Manor Lodge to have survived, than these Victorian/Edwardian buildings in a once highly industrial and very residential area that has long since passed it’s sell by date. IMHO Sheffield has many priorities that make the future of Attercliffe something to consider when it’s got them sorted.
