THE FULL MONTY FILMING LOCATIONS - IDSWORTH ROAD SHEFFIELD

Our next Full Monty Film Location takes us up into Sheffield 5 although I'm not sure what the actual area of Sheffield it is. It could be Fir Vale, or Firth Park? (if you know comment down below please!)

Situated just off Firth Park Road, Idsworth Road is the setting and filming location of all of this Full Monty movie scene where the lads stumble upon the male stripper show at the Millthorpe Working Mens Club (A Stones Brewery venue!)

Sheffield folk will know of the Working Mens Club as actually the former Roxy Cinema

Opened as the Page Hall Cinema on 24th May 1920 it was located in the Pitsmoor/Page Hall district of the city (today known as Fir Vale). It also boasted a café which opened in August 1920 and later in February 1921 a billiards hall (pool hall) was added. In 1929 a ballroom was added to an area behind the screen and this had its own separate entrance.

The Page Hall Cinema had seating provided in stalls and balcony levels was operated by an Independent exhibitor. It was the last of Sheffield’s cinemas to go over to talkies, which was on 16th November 1931 when following the installation off a British Thomson-Houston(BTH) sound system the film “Old Soldiers Never Die” starring Leslie Fuller & “The Immortal Vagabond” (Der unsterbliche Lump) starring Liane were screened. In 1945 it was acquired by the Buxton Theatres Circuit and re-named Roxy Cinema from November 1945.

A year later in November 1946 the Roxy Cinema was taken over by Reiss Cinemas of Leeds. In November 1957 a new screen was installed but in January 1958 a fire broke out in an area under the screen and it was destroyed as well as damage done to the balcony area. The cinema was closed for repairs (the ballroom was undamaged and stayed open) and it re-opened in June 1958, screening its first CinemaScope film “The Bridge on the River Kwai”.

The end was near and the Roxy finally closed on 14th June 1959 with Frank Sinatra in “Johnny Concho” and Stirling Hayden in “The Killing”. The cinema became a bingo hall and the ballroom became a dance studio. In later years the building has been used as a carpet store and snooker club. In 1997 it was used as a location as the exterior of a working mens club in the hit film “The Full Monty”.

The building, known as Regency House, was in use as the Northern Bedding Company showroom, but stands unused in September 2020.

The steps the lads walk down aren't where you think they are by watching the Full Monty movie.

In the film they appear to be across the road from the working mens club. In fact they're on the same side.

When you visit Idsworth Road you find the working mens club/cinema building easily enough and right next to it there are some steps but it's not those steps the lads walk down. Instead walk further up and on your left hand side on the same side as the building used for the Working Mens Club you'll come across the steps they used.

From the bottom of the steps looking down Idsworth Road you can see the Working Mens Club filming location on your right hand side, and the pebble-dashed house you see in this scene across the road on your left.

As our characters come down the steps they then come onto the road where the working mens club filming location is.

This is where The Full Monty movie has done some movie magic.

As we look up the hill the characters are crossing over from the right to come across the road to the club, but in fact the steps they just walked down are actually on the left of the picture in real life!

The Full Monty Filming location for the first Working Mens Club in The Full Monty on Idsworth Road Sheffield, was formerly the Roxy Cinema and now stands empty after being a furniture and carpet shop for a few years

You can see from the film still how the building was painted and decorated by the movie set designers to look like a fully open and functioning Working Mens Club!

As the lads cross over the road they come to the club and we can clearly see this access door and set of steps  in the movie scene.

It's not changed that much really

As the characters walk down past the queue of ladies queuing to get into the club to watch the strippers, the lads stop to talk outside the main entrance.

As the lads stop to check out the 'what's on' board they come across the poster for that nights entertainment - the male strippers!

This is shot next to the main entrance to the old cinema building on Idsworth Road

This Full Monty scene sets the tone of what is going to happen to our characters later in the movie.

The wall of the building where the poster was is just a plain wall now - the poster board was put there for the filming location

As the lads stop to discuss the strip show and the ladies going in to watch it we see a pebble dashed house in the background

No movie magic here - the house is literally straight across the road from the club filming location

And that's another Full Monty Filming Location DONE!
