Alastair
Anyone old enough remembers these quite fondly and they're a minor design classic. I created a Facebook page devoted to them during the first lockdown, The Yellow Bin Appreciation Society (Sheffield Branch). Feel free to join and if anyone has any photos of them to post, please do. They will be much appreciated. https://www.facebook.com/groups/201279054513672/ It's a light hearted group, but there are many old photos from the 60s to the 80s when they gradually disappeared. There's also the location of the four remaining Yellow Bins in the Sheffield area. This kind of thing. Except they're not always so easy to spot...
antony
Good grief, until looking at your FB page out of curiosity, I had totally forgotten these ever existed. I do remember them from my much younger days !! Thanks

Alastair
Bottom of the Moor, pre-Manpower Services building. The overhead Christmas lights spell out SANTA'S WORKSHOP. Was it a regular thing to have that on the waste ground down there?
Lemmy117
Santa's workshop was on the waste ground on the right hand side going up The Moor when I was a kid in the early sixties, and for several years.

The photo was taken by Mark Wrigley, son of J R Wrigley who did a popular series of picture books of Sheffield.

Alastair
I can see three David Mellor bins in this photo. There should be a fourth one outside the old ABC cinema, but it's not visible.

Alastair
There's been a new discovery in Chapeltown bringing the number of remaining David Mellor bins in the Sheffield area up to 6 now. Unfortunately it has recently lost its yellow insert so only the galvanised frame remains. This is from Google streetview in 2019 when it was complete. Alastair
The largest congregation of Yellow Bins known. There are six visible in this postcard
DaveJC
You would think that performing intimate sexual acts with Antonia de Sancha and Penelope Lyttelton would have been sufficient for this goofy toothed MP. But never to be daunted, he is now remembered for a yellow bin that is now named after him, what a man. 😁
Lemmy117
Well David Mellor the designer was born before David Mellor MP, so maybe he was named after the bins! 😄 Nigel L
Alastair
For the avoidance of doubt, the right David Mellor the Sheffield cutlery manufacturer and designer outside his Broomhall house vs the wrong David Mellor, disgraced Tory politician. Athy
I'm enjoying spotting the yellow bins, but I'm liking the proper Sheffield 'buses more! The E type Jag isn't bad either..
