Cheers John, I'd not spotted the maps on Picture Sheffield before. 

Fascinating! Which part I wonder was considered the main 'centre' back then. Does anyone know, please?

If you look at some of the fields they have odd patterns in them which sometimes vary a lot sometimes the same. I would guess they are indications of what is growing in them or what they are being used for. But there is no key explaining them.

It's a shame that map isn't available to purchase as some of their images are. Would look nice framed on my wall.

1736 map inset on 1823 version, which is very detailed and reasonably priced.
