tozzin
A while ago I saw this date stone with initials on it high up on the gable wall of the Queens Head pub at Ridgeway, with it being so high and partially obscured I doubt many people are aware of it. Old Sheffield
The J.H. is for Joseph Hutton, the premises were his workshops producing scythes and sickles. There is more elaborate carved stone facing the bottom car park, with the legend 'Palais Royale' , it is believed Hutton had visited Paris and named the workshops with that in mind. Things ended less sentimentality, he disposed of the building after a spat with his workers. During later building work a reaping hook and two sickles were found built into a wall. They had a noted dated 1822 with then signed by Joseph.
