Lemmy117
A friend of mine has sent me a couple of pictures of a fishing reel he has. He was wondering if this was just a manufacturer or if there was a shop.Any information will be greatly appreciated. Nigel L

Lemmy117
Thank you for posting that, although it raises another question. The address given is 467 Handsworth Road S9, but looking on Google Maps, 467 is near the junction of Handsworth Road, Retford Road and Orgreave Lane, definitely not S9, more like S13. Anyone an idea if this was a tackle shop or just a manufacturing place. Nigel L
Deaf Cat
I would not worry about the postcode - there were major changes in 1997. I would guess that the address was the manufacturing address of a small scale enterprise rather than a shop. Both the reel and the floats are practically invisible on the all-seeing interweb. Best sources might be electoral registers or Kelly guides for the 60’s. Love the “quite good” expert review of the floats! [Update] The reel looks to be a JW Young pattern 1 trout or salmon reel. These were made for and rebadged and modified for many other companies.

It’s possible that these buildings were used to manufacture the fishing tackle, reels, floats, etc.? https://www.old-maps.co.uk/index.html#/Map/441360/386410/12/100954 East Bank appears to have been demolished in the 70’s and some flats built on the site, with garages at the rear. https://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s06068&pos=1&action=zoom&id=9403 https://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s16749&pos=2&action=zoom&id=19447
