Water Pumps

Old maps of Greenhill show an abundance of Water Pumps scattered about the village.

The only Pump left in Greenhill is the one in this photograph! its located on the Main Road going through the village. The map from 1898 shows the location of all the Pumps & Wells in the village (14 pumps and at least 4 wells)

Right up until the early 2000s there was another Water Pump in the village, it was opposite the old Forge! it was damaged by builders and removed. Years ago i was told by a Landlord of The White Swan about a covered over well in the back room of the pub!

Are there any other locations in Sheffield where you can see the original Water Pump?

Interesting. Does your map extend over to Norton by any chance as I'd like to see if there are any around there. I know theres one near Norton at the top of Cobnar Rd, that is still there today.

Slightly off topic but I used live about 50 yards from the Greenhill pump. If you dug down about 4 feet, there was solid rock with about 6 inches of standing water on it.

This probably accounts for the number of pumps & wells there in bygone times.

I'm looking into Sheffield's surviving water pumps at the moment and any information or examples gratefully received. The one on Carterknowle Rd is claimed as being 17th century. That looks too early to me - any info on that?

I know a slightly hidden away one off Upwell St (dated 1836). When I googled it I found it is listed.
