I hope you are all well in these dark times!

I am new to this group and have always searched the forum for information on my area! I would love to know more about the norwood road/ roe wood area. I have picked up a few bits here and there but would love to know if people on here lived around here or had family living there in the past. Just want to get a feel of what the area was like in years gone by!

Roe Woods is an ancient woodland...once covering a much larger area. It contains natural springs and a host of wildlife including remnants of an area of heathland. It was also the sight of a Brigantine hillfort...sadly ,destroyed when Firth-Brown established their sportsground ( now owned by the Blades)

The Botanical Gardens were nearly built next to Roe Wood. In 1833 the two suggested sites were discussed at a meeting at the Cutlers Hall.  The Roe Wood site was the first suggestion, but the public were not in favour, due to the chance of being robbed on the way home via lonely wooded lanes, the steep hill to get there, and the cost of using the turnpike road.  Originally the committee vote had been 8 for the Roe Wood site and 6 for Clark House.

Roe Woods covered Crabtree Pond too? Must have covered a big area then at one point.
