SteveHB
Circus or fair in the Farm Grounds, also the first Sheffield Show was held in the grounds, don't know what year?
eldomsmith
On a side note, the triangle of land and it's enclosing wall towards the right, bounded by Queens Rd, Farm Rd and what was the chest clinic, now Grosvenor Casino seems to have evaded all development. On the photo here and on the '50s map you see the tennis courts and bowling greens, and you can still see the outlines on google satellite view today. It was the annual fair that was held in what we called the Farm Grounds, it was the one of the Duke of Norfolk’s homes, The Farm, we looked forward to the fair every year. Edmund
It didn't all go to plan in 1950. The Countess of Wharncliffe thought it was being held at Thurgoland, and unable to find it, went home to Wortley. The opening ceremony participants waited an hour in rain showers then decided to get Mrs Ibbetson, a poppy day organiser, do the honours. Attendance was lower than expected that year due to competing events. But worst of all, plans for the beer garden were shelved because of the bad weather.

History dude
Olive Grove Road is just off the top of the picture near the big building. Sheffield College stands on the Farm (the black castle looking building) site now. The X shaped road bridge being East Bank and Park Grange Roads. That newspaper report then dates precisely when the plane flew over. Saturday 26 August 1950. Though some of the vans could have been still there on Sunday. I will have to add a note on the Britain From Above website!
History dude
The data on the Britain From Above website actually confirms the plane flew over on the 26 August.

History dude
This Photo takes us a bit further along if that helps. But the "ground" closed in 1899 did it not? A bit early for aerial photography.
