Edmund
The Sheffield German Club was formed in about 1889 as a social and patriotic club to bring together German residents and their friends by means of musical and other gatherings. In February 1892 they met at the Wharncliffe Hotel to celebrate the German Emperor's birthday. In September 1892 they held a "Drawing Room Concert" at the Masonic Hall in Surrey Street, which included recitations, songs and musical performances. At that point the club had over 50 members and the secretary was Mr Bauer. Herr Schott of Seerbohm and Dieckstahl's was Chairman. This event was under the patronage of the Master Cutler (Mr J F Atkinson) who was present. Interest in the club seems to have dwindled by 1894 and a new German Club was set up by the German Department of the University in 1927, though this was mainly for students.
grobinson179@btinter
Many thanks for this Information. I am researching German born, Sheffield Tool maker, Hermann Schnetzler who was a member of the Club. G & S.
rover1949
May be totally unconnected but there is a house on Ecclesfield Common with a plaque 'Germanic Mount 1903'. I've often wondered what that referred to.

In November 1874 Herr Schnetzler was the hon. secretary of the club, which had "secured chambers in Figtree Lane". Many Englishmen had joined, mainly with the intention of learning the German language. On 26th June 1885 Mr and Mrs Schnetzler attended the funeral of Alderman James Gledhill at the General Cemetery. They were in the cortege which left the alderman's residence in Parker's Road, Broomhill. Herman had married Clara Helen Wild at the parish church in July 1878 when he was a foreign correspondent. Hermann died aged 49 on 28th July 1899 at Constance in Germany, and left £1218 4s 7d. In March 1899 just prior to his death, Hermann had become a director of W.A.Colley Ltd, iron and steel and tool manufacturers, which amalgamated Schnetzler, Colley and Co. with W.A.Colley of Arundel Street. In 1901 Hermann's widow Clara was living at 305 Fulwood Road, with 17 year old son Hermann R (Brewers's clerk and learning steel manufacture) and daughter Helen A.M. (a teacher of German).
