madannie77
I came across this business by chance whilst looking for something else. Thomas Allsop started as a dealer of surplus WW1 vehicles based in Matthew Street, Shalesmoor before moving to Worthing Road and then Hangar H1 at the Sheffield Aerodrome. Rebuilding of lorries took place, as did dealing in second-hand buses, the latter becoming a major part of the business in the 1930s. Also in the 1930s Allsop went into partnership with Arthur Kitson (a coach operator whose company formed the basis of Sheffield United Tours) and a new works was built on Penistone Road North, near the junction with Herries Road South. Post WW2 Allsop built a few bus bodies, including six for Booth & Fisher. Kitson bought Allsop's shares in the company in 1950 and Allsop set up a new business in Chesterfield. A more detailed history can be found at The Local Transport History Library in a PDF document (pages 3 to 8): http://www.lthlibrary.org.uk/library/PDF-129-1.pdf One of Booth & Fisher's Alllsop bodied Bedford OBs from http://www.old-bus-photos.co.uk/?cat=442 One of the vehicles built by Allsop for the Blood Transfusion service in the early 1950s
madannie77
I imagine this might be the Penistone Road North works. The Allsop history mentioned above suggests that the works passed to Kennings and was closed in the late 1960s. From Map
