Back in 1975 there was talks to install an overhead monorail tram network in Sheffield City Centre.

Here are a few images of how this overhead monorail tram system would have looked. To me it looks a little bit like the type of overhead tram system you see at Disneyland etc

What do you think - should it have gone ahead? Would we still be using it today?

The Liverpool Overhead Railway had closed 20 years earlier after a similar life span to the Sheffield electric tramway. Such schemes never really took on in this country compared to underground railways for example. With the level of traffic in modern cities I wonder if that will change?

My dad took an art night school course when I was a kid, I remember him drawing images of the proposed mono rail system. He recently gave me some photos and amongst them were these images. The grudlines on the hole in the road picture were to guide a drawing.
