Sheffield History
Does anyone remember the cockles and mussles man who used to come into your local pub to sell you seafood? Such a strange concept when you look back on it.. You'd be having a pint and a chat with your friends in an often hot and smokey pub, and a man would come in with a basket offering to sell you room temperature fresh (well I hope it was!) seafood in tubs and packets. Did your pub have one?
lysandernovo
My missus and I, together with friends, were regulars in the Admiral Rodney of a Saturday evening. Not only did we have "cockles and mussels" but we also seemed to win a parcel of fresh meat in the raffle almost every week ....so regular was it that our local butcher thought he had lost a customer! They seemed to be really popular blokes. I wonder if any of our readers used to actually be a cockles and mussels man! I hope so it would be great to hear their stories..
