THE CINECENTA cinema on Flat Street, overlooking Pond Street bus station.

Does anyone remember going to this cinema? Seemed so tucked away compared to others, so really surprised anyone would go there!

I remember going on few occasions. Dismal inside, seats were like park benches. Cheap though.

Looking at the film titles on offer, I’d say the photos were from no earlier than 1988. Maybe as late as 1989, looking at the cost of fuel at the Murco station (39.4p/ltr or 179.1p/gallon)

I used to pass this place regularly as a young ‘un, getting off the 32 in Pond Street, up the escalators and through the underpasses, into the town centre. I always thought this place showed the less salubrious offerings, martial arts films, adult material 😳 etc. John Candy, Goldie Hawn, Croc Dundee all seem a little mainstream to what I remember, but by 1988 I wouldn’t have been passing by much, if at all. It would have been 10 years earlier at least.

If i remember rightly it started as a members only Cinema, i was a member but the only film that i can recall seeing there was The Steve McQueen Movie Bullitt 1968 and with it being such a small Cinema in the famous car chase you felt like you was driving the car.
