[Sheffield History]

The Esquire club stood in the upper floors of the building that now houses The Leadmill .

The Johnny Dankworth Quintet opened the Esquire nearly two years to the day after the opening of Club 60 on Sunday, October 7, 1962.

The Esquire Club hit the ground running from day one. Local artists such as Joe Cocker, Dave Berry, Frank White, Dave Hawley, Ray Stuart (fronting Frankenstein and the Monsters) were regular performers. Picture shows young people in the Esquire.

Had a walk a walk along Leadmill Road the other day for the first time since the early sixties. 

It's 62 years in October since the opening night of the Esquire Club! There's a plaque on the wall of the old Esquire building (now the Leadmill) proclaiming that Jarvis Cocker played here in August 1980.

Maybe when the dispute about the ownership of the Leadmill is resolved there could be a plaque displayed to acknowledge it's Esquire Heritage.

All the nearby pubs have gone out of existence, the one called Dodgers on the corner of Leadmill Road, can't remember the name, The Rodley Inn: Joe Cockers (Vance Arnold) watering hole before and between sets at the Esquire, and right at the end of Leadmill Road The Truro Tavern.

Some of the biggest names in popular music have appeared at the Esquire/Leadmill let's hope it carries on into the future.
