Sheffield History
Take a look at this photo of Snig Hill in Sheffield City Centre. Are we basically looking over at where the Police Station is now?
ayfer
Yes. The tall gable end of the building on the left still stands. The shop 'Harrolls' seems to be still there but boarded up. The trees are new! Water Lane went down between the City School of Motoring and Direct Curtains. I think Water Lane nick was down there. There were a few stumbled and fell going down there to be charged at 'the Nick'! "He just tripped, honest Sarge."

Sheffield History
Snig Hill might get it's name from the wedges that were put behind the horse carts wheels when they stopped on hills, to stop them rolling backwards. The wedges were called 'snigs'.

My mother Minnie Cressey was the manageress there for many years. it was demolished and news paper booth stands or stood on the spot after. They made the curtains for the cinema across the road. Just out off sight on the right of the shop the gable end now has the portrait of a steelworker made from with the bricks. She was heart broken when they got notice of demolishing. The owner was a kind man. He kept it open to the very end and my mother was given a great final pay packet. He kept in touch for many years until he passed away .The buildings where the motoring school is and the rest going down were demolished and Snig Hill Police HQ built in there place
