Does anyone know if you can access old newspapers on line for free or do you have to join something and pay

Depending on how long ago you want, you could try britishnewspaperarchive.co.uk

There's a lot of info available free, but you need to do some interpretation - I've seen Girths, Marriages and Deaths on one page.

Here's one result:
