Having just joined Sheffield History, I would be interested to know if anyone has any information on the families arrival in the U.K.

in the mid nineteenth century (1851) and which members of the family emigrated from Wurttemberg in Germany. Apparently there

was a shortage of Pork Butchers at that time.

There were no butchers with German names in Sheffield during the 1820’s, but they did start to appear in the 1830’s.  In November 1836 Christopher Wiebel, a German Pork Butcher was trading on South Street Moor, when he had a pair of boots and some copper stolen. The culprit was let off on a technicality as the prosecutor’s name was spelt as Weber on the indictment. In September 1839 now reported as being Wrebel, though still in South Street, he had his till stolen.  There were Kramers running pork butcher shops in Pinstone street, Sheffield in 1833

On Christmas Day 1844 George Henry Heigold, a 23 year old butcher, (son of John a shoemaker), married Maria Lant 20, (daughter of John Lant, an Eating House proprietor) both of Masbro, at Rotherham parish church.

At the 1851 census George and Maria were at 24 West Bar. George was a pork butcher and stated that he was born in Germany (but a British subject)

At the 1851 census, George’s brother Christian Heigold was a 26 year old assistant pork butcher working for Eliza Stork or Slack (she couldn’t write her own name hence the confusion) at Masbro Bridge Foot. Christian married Eliza on 19th November 1851, both were living at West Bar, presumably temporarily, as they continued to run the Pork Butcher business in Masbro.

A third brother, John Frederick Heingold was born in Germany in 1838 (son of John Jacob Heingold, shoemaker), and married Harriett Hoult on Boxing Day 1859 at Doncaster – he was a grinder and they were living at Hexthorpe.
