Mr Chesterman at the City General Hospital

I work as a Cardiology Doctor at the Northern General Hospital and Sheffield University, but am also studying for a Diploma in the History of Medicine.

I am researching the life and work of Mr Judson Chesterman, who was a surgeon specialising in chest and heart surgery at the City General Hospital (now Northern General) from the 1940s to the 1970s . He was quite a remarkable character, making several important advances such as performing the first operation in the world to replace the mitral heart valve in 1955, and also  being the first to use a heart-lung machine in Europe, all done here in Sheffield.

I would love to hear from anyone with memories of him or any information generally relating to heart surgery in Sheffield during this period. You can post on here or email w.parker@sheffield.ac.uk

Thank you!

I vaguely remember the name but regret I can supply no detail for you. I do remember that donor blood for heart-lung machines had to be collected into a 'special' anticoagulant called Edglugate; at that time the heart-lung machines  required large quantities of blood to prime and run the machine. Afraid I can no longer remember any detail of the anticoagulant and no longer have access to reference sources.

Sorry not to be of more help but would be interested to see a copy of your finished paper.

My wife worked there on ITU late 60's until 1976. She remembers the great reputation that Chesterman had but sadly no detail.

I believe that there is a group of individuals that are involved with keeping the history of the NGH and artifacts, past staff members etc who are based at Sheffield Teaching. I would contact the hospital direct and ask details of the group. They would be in a better position to help you perhaps?
