Giants on Fargate

I found these pictures in an old photo album. Judging by the dates on others in the album, I believe my father took them around 1990. Does anyone recognise the subjects or have more information?

In a couple of the photographs there is a banner visible that says 'London Guise'.  I can't find any reference on the internet specifically to 'London' guise but wikipedia has some information about guisers (or mummers as they are also called) here

There are a couple of these at Kelham Island Ind. Museum. Saw them dancing at the Xmas market.

I think it's before 1990 as there's no bridge in the last photo to carry the tramway and the bridge was in years before the trams started running.

Can't be because Ponds Forge wasn't opened until 1991, and indeed the sign on the verge is for the 1991 World Student Games.

Supertram opened in 1994. Not sure exactly when construction of the viaduct started but it is probably a fair assumption say that photo was either 1991 or 92 as a result.

However....what has that photo got to do with the rest of the others?....can't see any giants on it!....perhaps it was included in the OP by error @Killamarshian ?

Bridge was constructed in 1993

Roadside hoarding shows ‘XVI UNIVERSIADE, 14-25 JULY 1991’

Centre Flag on Ponds Forge flagpoles appears to be ‘World Student Games’

Right hand flag is EU ‘ring of stars’ on blue backdrop.

By April of 1992, Commercial Street looked a whole lot different

..... so my money is on 1991, either before, during or not long after the WSG!

Would agree with 1991. I've got some pictures of the bridges being built dated 92/93, (worked on the project), must get them scanned sometime!

Sorry, I put the last pic on to help date the set. I forgot to mention why.

Seems the history of these and the answer to why they were in Sheffield at that time is here....

last paragraph is the clue! :)

These aren't the Sheffield City Giants.  They don't look like them, and the Sheffield City Giants weren't built until 1992.  There may be some connection between the London Guise and The Sheffield City Giants but it's not obvious.

I never said, nor implied they were. My comments were aimed at the reference to the ‘World Student Games’ and them being built after that event... in 1992 as I recall?  Although their height and facial appearance are similar to the three figures on Norfolk Row, sixth image down in the above set?

They maybe could have been spotted on Fargate 12 months prior, had they been crammed into the Tardis and transported into the past? Seems like another gratuitous Dr. Who / Sheffield reference..... but without the spiders?  :)
