Sheffield History
Orchard Square shopping centre. Opened in 1987 on the former site of John Brown and Co. Steel Works. What do we know about this site and what else has been on these premises?
rover1949
I don't know the history but I was at the opening ceremony with Prince Charles. A waitress from the Museum Pub brought a glass of beer out for him and we all appeared in 'The Star' and 'Look North' that night. Before that I think it was the back entrance to the Stone House? There used to be a fantastic lift that took you down to the basement where there was an interesting eating area with a wide variety of foods. I loved a cafe there which did a coffee and a muffin for a pound!! They even did a coffee refill!! It was the first cafe I knew that did this and I was a regular customer!! I was sorry to see the cafe area close and the lift go and then TK max take over, it has no character now!!
