A little bit about Sheffield City Hall

Sheffield History

The Smaller Hall at the back is the Memorial Hall, not the Oval Hall. It's the big hall that's the Oval Hall (There's a big clue in the name).

The smaller door next to the rear exit door (2.25 - 2.30) was the entrance to the managers flat at the top of a long climb of stairs.

Wonder if it's still there?

What were the two plinths for, either side of the main entrance?

I know there used to be stone lions on the stage, but don't recall any outside.

Doesn’t look like there was anything on them??? Newly built and unadorned!

Hi,  just a little history I heared from my uncle some years ago,  that the stone to build the old city hall, came from a quarry behind the cemetery in the manor fields. Not sure exactly where, it belong to our family many years ago known as Fletchers quarry.

Some before and after photos of the City Hall site.

The three old photographs taken around the Barker`s Pool area are from picture Sheffield, the present day photograph is from Google Earth.

Quoting from Wikipedia about City Hall " it was originally proposed in 1916 as a Memorial Hall to commemorate the dead of the Great War"

The construction of City Hall wasn`t completed until 1932!

I wonder what happened to the horse trough standing by the side of the iron man?
