Fargate in Sheffield City Centre in 1896

I know places can change and look a lot different over the years but surely Fargate here is just incredibly different. Virtually impossible to identify!

The building with Thomas Lee on the gable end is the Green Dragon Hotel. This terrible building replaced it.

But then the building with WH Smith’s on the ground floor and the one next door that is Santander still survive!?! imageproxy.php?img=&key=650f33e77c1e808a Struggling to find an image without the scaffolding up? Similar perspective so you can see the new and old? 😁

What a stunning view. I love the advertising signage 'Bovril' etc.

. Boots and Austin Reed on the right hand side of the pic!

My memory of Austin Reed's is that my parents used to take me there to have my hair cut. Despite it being primarily a clothing shop, there was a barber's on about the third floor.

I don't know why Dad decided that I should have my haircuts there - he didn't. He used Henry Wheeler, a barber near the school where he taught in Woodhouse.

There were no electric shears, everything was manually operated, if that helps.

So you went there too?

I worked just around the corner, so found it very convenient, plus there were most often  no queues to worry about.

I have just remembered: I must have been very young indeed when my Dad started taking me there, as the barber used to put a board across the arms of the chair and I sat on the board so that he didn't have to bend over so far to reach my hair. I felt very grown up the first time I was allowed to sit on the actual chair!

I bet they are window cleaners on the left, wouldn't be aloud today.

I was talking to our window cleaner last month.  He uses a long pole with the cleaning head at the end.  He said that very few cleaners now use ladders, not because of a ban but because the insurance premiums are excessive.

I can understand that, I once fell from off a thirty foot ladder, luckily I was on the bottom rung.

I worked on Fargate in the 1960’s, and being an acrophobia some of the sights that I saw in respect of high rise window cleaning turned my blood to water.
