FARGATE in Sheffield City Centre

Just like the Moor I think it was better before pedestrianisation, we had a great traffic system with one long straight line from Abbeydale to Attercliffe, The traffic did move slowly in the busy periods but that didn't seem to matter when you could jump on and off a tram or bus anywhere along the way.

Fargate shops in Sheffield city centre.

wow, what an amazing photograph, some of the buildings have not changed at all.

When I walk through Fargate, I spend most of my time looking up above the shops there now, that is where all the beauty of the architecture lies.

Thanks for sharing, have you got any other photos of Fargate?

Great photo of Fargate before it was pedestrianised looking down High Street. Boots and Austin Reed on the right hand side of the pic!

Any idea when and why it was called Fargate ?

No gate involved here, the word gate was used for a way (roadway) so it just meant Far Way.

I know that Gate is the original Northern/'Anglo-Scandinavian' word for Street since the years of the Danelaw or before.  But the 'Far' part, if it's modern English it's obviously what it says, but I suspect it's older ... and may mean something else ) (??)

Pretty much the same meaning as now - the more distant road (from the castle and adjacent market side of town)

Is this camera angle really deceptive or did Fargate go to the left here?

ORIGIN OF FAR

....  Old Anglo-Saxon feorr; cognate with Old High German ferr, Old Norse fjar  ...
