madannie77
That's an interesting viewpoint. I suggest it was taken between 1905 and 1908. Car 177 had the top cover fitted in either 1904 or 1905 and there is no sign of the tramline from Fargate into Leopold Street which was built in 1908. What is the man to the left of the rather prominent lady in white doing?
Athy
Hmmmm... - He's one of Sheffield's first moslems and it's prayer time? - He is a pavior fixing a loose slab? - He's a member of the Sheffield curling team practising for a forthcoming match? - He's just proposed to the lady in white who has turned him down? Voldy
It looks to me as though a survey was underway and the man kneeling, the 'Flagman' standing between the tracks, the two men to the right of tram 177,one with theodolite legs over shoulder plus the man bending (seemingly on the end of the trolley of the foreground tram!) are the survey team. Possibly in connection with the Leopold Street connection mentioned by madannie77. Was there a rehearsal going on for a Royal visit or something? Heartshome
Hi Voldy, it certainly looks like some kind of survey, it is most probably for more tram lines as you say, but you could also be right about a Royal visit, as Picture Sheffield have now got a series of prints on, of the Royal visit to Sheffield in 1905 by King Edward and Queen Alexandra. Maybe we will never get to know the real answer
