Another world....It's probably a 1950's Whit Monday.... with the huge crowd at the "Terminus", in their Sunday best, watching the Boys Brigade parade out of Firth Park. The band are probably from 54th Firth Park Meths...as the others from that section of the parade... ,Hatfield House Lane and Beck Road... would have processed up Sicey Avenue as they escorted, bandless, Valentine Crescent Congs up to Hatfield House Lane .. My only doubt about it being a Whit Monday is the lack of  Sunday School banners... but possibly the band were about to pick up their "scholars" and church members in the procession to the (very much missed) Whit Sings.

yes they are turning into Sicey Ave and it looks like there is a banner at the back just to the left of the belisha beacon . Anyone who used to go would say definitely Whit Monday. Life's simple pleasures.

Yes, it is the Co Op and, yes, it is Sicey Avenue up which they are parading, and yes, on careful scrutiny, there may well be banners. The one behind the Belisha beacon appears to be quite tall...which could make it Shiregreen Congs ( Valentine Cresc)...the tallest in the Firth Park Whit sing ...and I should know I helped carry it many times! Happy days.

Perhaps the pic should best be entitled..."Firth Pak Terminus on Whit Monday":rolleyes:

Can't see any remaining evidence of the tramway system though, (overhead lines, traction poles, etc.), but the street lamp standards would have been contemporary with that. So maybe middle 1960's?

Maybe, but the tram system went straight through the middle of the roundabout featured in both of Kidneystone's photographs (before and after above), and so, the overhead lines, and traction poles should be visible in the 1950 image, but I can't see them. The original tramway system would not disappear from this location until 1960.

As a young lad I remember the island , with its fancy flame shaped lights, being built and even though my memory isn't fool proof I should have thought that was later than 1950. In any case, Zebra crossings only began to be introduced nationally ,by law, from 1951.
