Guest SteelCityBoy
Just a general question really to anyone with any sort of history on Bere's. I live in Hillsborough (although not originally from here) and frequent the place quite often, and I regard them as the finest pork sarnies in the land. Just wondered really. Thanks. Guest roystonowl
The brothers came from Hungary after the uprising in 1956 (along with my dad) It should be pronounced 'Beresh'. Finest sandwich in christendom. Nothing better before a nice 3-0 home win at the theatre of shattered dreams.
Guest tsavo
When the first Hungarians arrived in Sheffield, we stared at them. Not because the were foreign, (for we didn't know that then) but because they were dressed in bright blue and red windcheaters. You must remember that at this time we were still recovering from the war and clothing was still confined to (by comparison) dowdy browns, blues and greys. They certainly stood out while shopping in Crookes. In short order, we discovered that similar coloured jackets were available by mail order from Hong Kong. So in a way, the Hungarian refugees were responsible for starting a new fashion, in Crookes anyway!
