Hi, I wonder if any of you members can help with the location of this photograph? When I first saw it my immediate thought was Howard Street but now I'm having second thoughts! Thank you.

Yes it is Howard Street, bought many a Fish & Chip lunch here in the mid 50's.

1960 Telephone Directory sez:-

C.H. Harrington & Company Limited, sheet metal workers and copper smiths, 38, Howard Street, telephone number: 28537

Rowbotham Wingfield, cutlery manufacturer, 36, Howard Street, telephone number: 20430

Who needs Maureen 118 - ? lol

POSTSCRIPT: And for completeness,

Probably closed over the festive weekend though. ;-)

So Mary Gentle's went on to become the Harlequin and everything from Harrington's up the street was demolished to make way for Arundel Gate ?

I wonder how old Howard Street is? When it first appears on maps etc? Too many questions!

The streets from Norfolk street down to the River Sheaf were all laid out on Alsop Fields, starting in the 1790's. Vincent Eyre agent of the Duke of Norfolk named all the streets after the duke's family, titles  and possessions giving us Norfolk St, Howard St, Furnival St, Surrey St, Earl St, Arundel St etc. and one after himself Eyre St.

Sorry to be pedantic but it was " Alsop" no apostrophe " S "
