The big clue is, the poster is advertising a public hanging that very day - a genuine notice would have been published days or even weeks before, so that people who wished to attend could make arrangements to do so, surely? Al;so, the convict's name would have been included, not just "a young girl".
lysander
The poster says "Home Department"...surely, even then it was "Home Office".....That said, there are records of 17 year olds being executed by hanging straight after sentencing. One simple lass in 1832 was hung at Lincoln for "starting a fire" on the most doubtful evidence.... "Happy Days".-, indeed!

You have to think in the parlance of the day for this poster, I think this day just means the date of the "execution".

John Russell
It occurred to me that the first poster about the hanging of the girl exhibited a level of sarcasm (particularly the seemingly anti-religious tone of last paragraph) that suggested it's the work of the abolitionist movement. I therefore looked up the name of the publisher at the bottom of the leaflet, 'C Gilpin'. This revealed he was a Quaker, Charles Gilpin: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Gilpin_(politician). The Quakers were leading players in the abolition of capital punishment and it would appear one of their tactics was to publish leaflets/posters adopting a tone much like 'Private Eye' today. It also explains why the child being hanged was not named.
Edmund
I think these notices would be propaganda on behalf of one of the anti capital punishment societies. In 1847 Charles Gilpin was publishing numerous flyers and leaflets, including "The DEBATE Upon the MOTION for ABOLISHING the PUNISHMENT of DEATH, in the HOUSE of COMMONS, Tuesday March 9th, 1947". Gilpin also published flyers for anti-slavery associations and Christian Peace Society. I wouldn't think that executions were advertised (how would the printing be financed?) at this late stage - possibly in the 1600's. EDIT - overlapped with John Russells post and in agreement!)

John Russell
Hi Tozzin [I didn't hit 'reply' as it would have repeated your long list of executions.] To avoid any confusion; I did not use the word 'spoof' myself. The hanging referred to in the poster/leaflet was indeed a real event. The point I was making is that it was not an official announcement, rather it was a satirical notice produced by the abolitionist movement about a real event. It highlighted the inhumanity and hypocrisy of hanging the 17-year-old girl. Cheers.

Mea culpa: it was I who had introduced the word "spoof" into the thread, before you joined it I think.
