More help needed by our Sheffield History detectives. This time it's the Norfolk Hotel we're looking for information on

What can we find out about this place and what can you tell us about the first photo here?

There was a Norfolk Hotel at the junction of Handsworth Road and Finchwell street (which led down to Handsworth colliery) but it was a more substantial building with two big bay windows.  If you search Picture Sheffield for trams, Handsworth you will find it, their reference number s16477.  I think this was a rebuild on the site of your pictures because the wall and tree at the right seem to be the same.  For a long time the Handsworth tram terminus was here.

The Norfolk Hotel building is still there, it is now the Highgate Day Nursery.  I had always thought that the building, shown above, had bay windows added to give the current building but looking at the photos there is not enough room for the upper floor windows of the current building, so it must have been a rebuild. Yhe wall is still there but unfortunately the tree has gone.

Picture Sheffield say it is Upperthorpe Road but the address they give is I think the same as the  Upperthorpe Hotel.

Gordon's post about the tree and the wall looks quite convincing, the tree and wall look very much like those at Handsworth. Expert research needed.

I agree with you there , the address 159 Upperthorpe Road is the Upperthorpe Hotel which is still there today and looks nothing like this building.

In 1911 a Robert Macbeth was the victualler of  159 Upperthorpe which most likely was the Upperthorpe Hotel.

I don't think it looks anything like the one at Handsworth either more like the one at Grenoside.

Yes I agree that it is similar to the Norfolk Arms at Grenoside but I can't see any matching stone work, and the chimneys, though same in number are at different angles. What do you make of the landlord's name on the sign. I have zoomed in as best as I can and it looks like George Finly / Inlby or something like that.

The landlord of the first picture is George Gray and the second is George Wilby, hope this helps it is a very awkward one to sort.

Many thanks for your replies they have been very useful, would be great if we could find out more.

Good one neddy, I knew this was a pub but didn't remember it's name, though not the same building, could the one in the picture be the one pulled down for road widening?  The picture Sheffield link has a description. The map shows it at the bottom of Finchwell Road which was previously Park Lane.      ---------------------               (c)       Google Street View  https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.3748172,-1.3921616,3a,75y,13.58h,93.73t/data=!3m6!1e1!3m4!1sHiiHQEj8Wgqypz9kfdupbg!2e0!7i13312!8i6656            -----------------------        Picture Sheffield        http://picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;a01819&pos=35&action=zoom&id=113674 ----------------         and NLS       http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=18&lat=53.3750&lon=-1.3923&layers=171&right=BingHyb
