Calvin72
A large building appears to be being demolished here. I notice because it had one of a handful of remaining street signs dating from 1890 which has hands pointing in both directions as street rationalisation of that year changed 'Upper' and 'Lower' to just one road. However the building itself appears to be quite sizeable. Does anyone know what it was? The street sign has disappeared (the best remaining example is on Graham Rd, at the junction with Hangingwater Rd).
RLongden
223 Abbeydale Road, Corner of Chippinghouse Road 2012 > Just before demolition / refurbishment - KP Plumbing & Heating 1972 - H. Jackson, Abbey Antiques 1881 - Charles Marples, Grocer (attached image is entry from Kelly's Directory of 1881, sadly not the shop?) Seems the shop pre-dated the street sign? 1897 - John Laurence Dixon, Grocer and Beer Retailer, suing debtors, or being sued himself? 1938 - (this is a bit more like it!) Florence Drewery Maxfield, Maxfield's Motorised Bicycle Company! surely worthy of some further investigation??? Anyone any knowledge of this company? Calvin72
This is the sign. They are stunning, when you get close up it can be seen that the hands are carved, not just painted. https://postimg.org/image/mkss9spct/
