Anyone remember this nightclub? What was it like?

I went there for a while in the late 60s, it was quite exotic for Sheffield at the time.

There were two separate entrances, one for the casino (no booze) and one for the night club.

The night club had a stage, dance floor, bar and a restaurant.  I remember seeing Bitter Suite on stage.

For me it was a step up from the Mojo.

I remember the Cavendish very well. It was VERY sophisticated and posh, for the time.

Opening in May, 1967, it was aimed at an older set, although when we joined,I was still only 19.

It was quite big, with a bar, a restaurant, a small cabaret floor, a quieter room and the main cabaret room.

Membership was 1 Guinea a year (£1.05) and then there was a cover charge of around 7/6 (37 1/2p) to get into the Cabaret Room.

Many BIG names of the day appeared there, including: Kathy Kirby (who opened it), Max Bygraves, Dusty Springfield, Sandy Shaw, Val Doonican, Bob Monkhouse,Diana Dors, Dave Allen, Dickie Valentine, Scott Walker, etc.

There were some other big names too, that I can’t recall, without mixing them up with the Fiesta’s rosta.

We used to go often, mostly on week-ends. Suits, Jackets and Ties were the rule, or, you didn’t get in.

United & Wednesday players were quite often there too.

Its business suffered quite quickly after the Fiesta opened in 1970 and it changed its name to Baileys.

Great memories of happy times there.

Here is the opening announcement ad from The Star........

Since it opened in 1967 this Club seems to have had a good few name changes over the years, but if it is the same building I remember, in 1971 I went there for my 18th with the 'Gang'. You went downstairs to the Disco, the Bar was on your right along the wall from the bottom of the stairs, and there were small platforms where they had 'GoGo' girls dancing. Once went to the Cabaret there to see SUZI QUATRO, wow! she was terrific.

I'm not sure of what name it was when I went there, but think it must have been the Cavendish or Baileys.

Didn't the streets look clean and tidy then? And oh those cars look great.
