I remember going to see Pantomimes at the Palace in the 50s.

According to an interview with Tony Richards ( here: Interview Tony Richards ) it closed in July 1955,  and at that point "had Twice Nightly Variety; so there were two performances each evening; about six o’clock and 8:30, so the show would be about two hours."    "not that I particularly went for the nudity, I just - it didn’t mean very much - well I knew that it was a bit daring – but of course that was only part of the bill; and the rest of it was, you know, comedians and singers and acrobats, that’s what variety was. I even remember one act was a woman who used to do paper tearing and made things out of all sorts."

I can remember Beryl Reid giving an interview about her life and she did remark about the Palace that her dressing room was something to be desired as the Rats would make it a habit of eating her knickers.

Yes l do they used to have still nudes on with doves ,,we sneaked in once me I’m Harry Briscoe ,,Dave Briscoe ,frank tooze ,and his brother ken ,ok for about 10 min then we were thrown out ,,we did same at regal on staniforth road ,ken was the thinnest so we shoved him through the bars about half an hour before it started ,they had big curtains we hid untill it got fullish ,,then went l by l to our designated seats ,,arches our backs up so we looked bigger but we forgot l major factor ,kids were not allowed in on a sundays thrown out again ,,happy days

It was still there when I was an apprentice at Sanderson Bros & Newbould in 1959. I am not sure but I think it had become a bingo hall then.

Interior of the Palace Theatre, Attercliffe Road, after redecoration in Moorish style, for cinema use. Originally a Variety Theatre called The Alhambra which opened 3rd January 1898, renamed at the turn of the century and closed 1st July 1955.
