South Yorkshire Folk Tales

Not really a tale...Years ago, I acquired a battered little book from a church book sale, The title, from memory, was "Sheffield Folk Poems". One stuck in my mind ...it was about how the River Don would take a life every year. Sadly, the book went missing... probably.loaned to someone who left without returning it, or mislaid in one of my many house moves. Does anyone know the real title or have a copy?

After a little search I found part of the rhyme on Dr. David Clark's website about Sheffield ghosts. The rhyme is said to be at least mediaeval and Joseph Hunter speculated it dated from a time when human sacrifices were made to the river. It reads:-"The shelving, slimey river Dun/ each year a daughter or a son."
