Calvin72
At the end of Oakdale Road, by Union Road, in Nether Edge there is a street sign that is a stone slab in the wall. I think it is original and therefore nineteenth century. Nearby, outside 157 Chelsea Road, there is a similar example that has been covered over by a pre-War sign. Interestingly the stone sign underneath has a different name (P..........ad). Presumably Park something Road? Anyone know the date of the name change? Also the date of Oakdale Road? Many thanks! RichardB
Chelsea Road previously Palmerston Road; changed by the Council 10th September 1886. (Information from HughW at some dim and distant point in the past).
Calvin72
Great stuff Richard! The previous stone sign that I raised on another thread was pre-1883, and this one is pre-1886. I think this is before Sheffield street signs were common. Maybe they were privately made and installed? Were there usually street signs prior to motor cars?
