It is a relatively new building because before the war on that site was Davy's Mikado cafe and a tailors shop. After the war it was still a Day's cafe, here it is in 1952 (c)Picture Sheffield ------------------     http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s16953&pos=179&action=zoom&id=19635

Look a bit closer and you will find the circular decorations between the first and second floor windows are the same in both pictures. Therefore the building is the same it is just the canopy over the old Davies café that has been removed in the first picture.

Yes that's because the picture I put up is the same building, as I said, after the war in 1952 and the new building, Here is the pre war old Davy's Mikado Cafe  and the tailors shop that I mentioned which is clearly not the same building----------    (c)Picture Sheffield  -----http://www.picturesheffield.com/frontend.php?keywords=Ref_No_increment;EQUALS;s16967&pos=6&action=zoom&id=19649

The Davy's building I well remember is the one with the small tower...it certainly looks a typical 1930's vintage building. I don't recall the Mikado Café and would suggest the block was demolished and replaced in the 1930's. The mock-Tudor building to its right appears in all the shots.

I think that you are correct lysander, the old building was there in 1932 but it was the new building by 1937, and it narrowly missed being hit in the blitz. I have not as yet come across the exact date of the pre-war rebuild. I know that the Davy's Cafe in the new building was often referred to as the Mikado but don't know whether that was it's official name or just old memories. Davy's used animal head decorations on their buildings I think but can't remember the detailed decorations on this one.
