Montgomery and the Sheffield Iris - plaque formerly on Telegraph Building

Recommended Posts

I am researching the history of the old Montgomery Tavern and Iris Offices which stood on Hartshead, and I have been trying to establish what happened to the plaque which was at the back of the Telegraph and Star buildings, at the end of Aldine Court, prior to the erection of the new loading bay - see link below.  Sadly several lines of enquiry, including through the librarian at the Star, were unable to cast any light on its fate, so I am hoping that the collective knowledge of the members here might throw up some clues or even the answer!

Also, does anyone know when the new loading bay was built?  That would add another point on a time-line.

Thanks, Adrian

Hi Adrian,

I wondered if you got to the bottom of this? I'm looking into the history of the Iris and am also curious to find out what happened to the plaque. Seems a shame if there is no public acknowledgement of it in the city.

Thanks

I'm not sure if this bit of info is true but I read sometime ago that the doorway and shop front of the Iris was bought and sent to America.

Dont have any real info on what you are seeking...sorry.

Do have two copies of the Iris...dated 1802. Has news about Nelson and the call over for the St Leger.

Still dont know why they were saved within the family...
