Guest tsavo
That's the Marples Hotel on the left of picture so must be pre 1941 and the Blitz.

Guest tsavo
Could be an MG sports, but more likely the popular, (and cheaper) Austin Seven Chummy.

Sheffield History
Sheffield High Street in 1908 Main change is that the big white building on the left where the Star Newspaper used to be. Therefore we need to try and find out what the buildings on the left hand side were, what businesses were there etc Anyone know?

madannie77
High Street at some time between 1901 and 1905, with Walsh's and the Westminster Hotel prominent. From my collection

madannie77
John Walsh's building on High Street certainly was a fine looking building. Unfortunately it was destroyed in the Blitz. I like the man up a ladder reflected in the glass of the Walsh's building.

boginspro
Here is another one from a postcard, dated 1908. Big curve in the tram tracks to Church Street.
Sheffield History
Crikey - that bendy tram track looks mad! Wonder why they did it like that?
madannie77
I think it might be due to the church (now Cathedral) grounds extending further out than they do now, which made Church Street narrower than High Street. Hence the tracks had to curve somewhat to attain the centre of the road. 1903 map from NLS: https://maps.nls.uk/view/125651209#zoom=5&lat=3862&lon=2921&layers=BT EDIT: This 1890 map (before the tramway was built) shows the extent of the church grounds in that year very clearly. https://www.old-maps.co.uk/#/Map/435500/387500/13/100453

Pub seen on the left is the White Bear, I think the "Ward's" may be referring to the keeper at that time (1893 Mrs Martha Ward Burgess / Davis). https://www.picturesheffield.com/s00285
